The knowledge you learnedhas already expired.
Professional knowledge now goes stale faster than it takes to earn a degree. In a world that never stops moving, the only knowledge that stays fresh is the kind you pick up in motion, on the job and in the work itself.

Knowledge used to be something you bought once. You learned a trade at twenty and lived off it until retirement, no questions asked. That is not how it works anymore. Knowledge has become perishable. It comes with an expiration date, and the shelf life keeps getting shorter. The real question is no longer what to learn, but how long any of it will stay worth knowing.
The pace that changed
To see how much the pace has changed, look at engineers. In the 1930s, the engineering knowledge you picked up in school stayed useful for about 35 years before half of it went stale. That was long enough to build a whole career on a single degree. By 2002 the number had dropped to seven years. Today, in fields like AI, it is estimated at under three.
Now hold that against a simple fact. A bachelor’s degree takes three to four years, which means half of what you learned in your first year was already outdated by the day you got your diploma. And this is not only a tech problem. The World Economic Forum estimates that nearly 40% of the skills considered essential today will lose their value by the end of the decade.
Academia is not slow out of laziness
It is easy to blame the university, but academia is not slow because professors are lazy. It is slow because it was built to be slow. Accreditation cycles, curriculum committees, textbooks written two years before anyone reads them. Every one of those mechanisms exists to guarantee rigor, and that is exactly why none of them can move at the speed of the field.
The deeper problem, though, is not the pace. It is the model. A degree is a snapshot, a sharp framed picture of what was known at one moment, hung on the wall. But today’s knowledge is not a picture. It is a live broadcast.
“A degree is a snapshot. Today’s knowledge is a live broadcast, and you cannot photograph a river and expect the picture to stay current.

Learning while it moves
If knowledge keeps moving, you have to learn it on the move. The old 70-20-10 model got at this decades ago: people pick up roughly 70% of their professional knowledge from doing the work, 20% from the people around them, and only 10% from formal study. Most of what you actually know how to do, you learned by doing it.
And the difference is not only about memory. It is about freshness. Knowledge earned in the field updates itself, because it is tied to a reality that keeps changing. You never have to refresh it. It refreshes on its own, against the next client, the next failure, the next experiment. That is the opposite of a certificate, which starts aging the moment it is issued.
What it means for creators
To be fair, the degree is not dead. In regulated professions like medicine, law and structural engineering there is no substitute, and the salary premium is still real. But that is exactly why the claim is worth sharpening. It is not that a degree is worthless. It is that knowledge which expires too fast to load up in advance has to be earned another way.
And this is where creators hold something rare. An active creator, whether a photographer, a chef, a coach or a founder, does not learn their field once. They live inside it. Their knowledge is cooked in the field, tested against a real audience, and updated with every project. If you are sitting on knowledge like that, it has a window, and it is most valuable while it is still fresh, before the field shifts again.
